Useful web sites

For this Friday tip, I'd like to share a handful of useful (and free) web sites to enhance your computing skills and nerd skills!

  • http://www.opendns.com - Promises to protect your children from online violence, phishing, adult material, and other undesirable elements on the internet.  Simply sign up and point your PCs or router to the OpenDNS servers.  They guarantee bullet-proof protection.

  • http://www.missingmoney.com  - Unfortunately, I did not find anything under my name, but I did find money for my uncle and a second cousin!  All I got was a pat on the back.

  • http://www.learn10.com - Presents 10 new foreign-language vocabulary words a day.  There are currently 20 languages on the web site.

  • http://www.openoffice.org - If you need software comparable to Microsoft Office at home, but don't want to clunk down the dough or "borrow" a friend's copy, check out Open Office.

  • http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free#axzz0brnB2oLE - Anti-Virus for your home computer.  The free version may suffice.

  • http://www.mint.com - Free personal finance software.  Finally, you can see how much you spend on potato chips!

  • http://www.gimp.org - An image editor similar to Adobe Photoshop which includes filters, effects, masks, and layers.

  • http://www.overmyminutes.com - This web service monitors your minutes and sends you alerts when your remaining minutes drop below a threshold that you define.  There is an app available for iPhone too.

  • http://www.evite.com - Lets you create and email party invites and track RSVP's online.

Have you recently stumbled upon a cool and interesting web site?  Let me know about it!  I might just share it with everybody!

Your feedback to date has been greatly appreciated and helps gauge future articles.
Please feel free to contact me with questions/comments.

Thanks,
Jason
